Catherine Hayes

F, b. 17 March 1842, d. 4 February 1916
It is nearly certain that Catherine Hayes was born in Pennsylvania in March of 1842. One census gives her year of birth as 1835, but that may have been provided by another person. She consistently indicated that her parents had both been born in Ireland. The most likely set of parents are Michael and Joanna Hayes, both Irish, who were recorded in Philadelphia in the census of 1850 with their children Mary, Margaret, Catheren and John (all born in Pennsylvania), although the age for "Catheren" is inconsistent with Catherine's, 9 instead of 8. I can find no evidence of this family in later census returns. Catherine Hayes was born circa 1835 in Pennsylvania.1 She was born on 17 March 1842 in Pennsylvania.2,3 She married Theodore Esray on 13 February 1864 in West York Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.4 She married William A. Clear on 2 April 1866 in Philadelphia; Bride's name is listed as Kate Esray.5,6 She and William A. Clear appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Brighton, Montgomery county, Maryland, enumerated 17 August 1870. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them.7 She and William A. Clear appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Spotsylvania county, Virginia, enumerated June 1880. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them.8 She was enumerated in 1900 census, living with Wm. H. Wilson and Mary C. Wilson in California, last name Claire. The birthplace of both parents was listed as Ireland. She indicated 3 children, only one living.9 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Marin county, California, in the household of William Henry Wilson and Mary Clare Wilson, her daughter.10 On 29 April 1910 Catherine Clear lived in 846 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, California.11 She died on 4 February 1916 at age 73.12,3 She was buried in Presidio of San Francisco, San Francisco, California.12
