     Herbert Vincent Neal was a professor of biology at Knox College and Tufts University. He was born on 3 April 1869 in Lewiston, Androscoggin county, Maine. He was the son of John Neal and Caroline Augusta Noyes. He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lewiston in the household of his parents, John Neal and Caroline Augusta Neal.1 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lewiston, Androscoggin county, Maine, in the household of his mother, Caroline Augusta Neal.2 He graduated from Bates College, Androscoggin county, Maine, in 1890; A.B.3 He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1893; A.B.3 He received a Master of Arts degree from Harvard in 1894; A.M.3 He received a Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in 1896; Ph.D.3 He was employed as professor of Biology in 1897 in Knox College, Galesburg, Knox county, Illinois.3 He married Helen Phillips Howell, daughter of George Miller Howell and Mary Harriet Goldsmith, on 8 June 1899 in Southold, Suffolk county, New York. He and Helen Phillips Neal appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Galesburg, Knox county, Illinois, enumerated 18 April 1910. Their children Helen, Margaret and John were listed as living with them.4 He was employed as professor of Biology and Dean of the Graduate School in 1913 in Tufts University, Middlesex county, Massachusetts.3 He and Helen Phillips Neal appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Somerville, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, at 126 Packard Avenue, enumerated 5 January 1920. Cause of death was injuries he suffered in an automobile accident. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Lewiston, Androscoggin county, Maine; plot 317.10
