     Benjamin Swaffield was a farmer, baliff to the Duke of Devonshire.1 He was born on 31 October 1797 in East Chelborough, Dorset, England.2,3,4 He was the son of Benjamin Swaffield and Hannah Burdett.4 He was baptized on 28 January 1798 in East Chelborough.4 He married Frances Chubb, daughter of James Chubb, on 19 March 1829 in Evershot, Dorset, England.5 He married Frances Watkinson on 11 February 1836 in St. Thomas Church, Brampton, Derbyshire, England; the Brampton parish record reads: "Benjamin Swaffield, of Edensor in the County of Derby, widower, and Frances Watkinson of this district, spinster were married in this Church by License this eleventh day of February, in the Year One Thousand eight hundred and thirty six. By me, Matson Vincent, M.A. Minister. In the Presence of John Watkinson, Maria Chobb, Joseph Wright."6 He was churchwarden of the Edensor church on 9 July 1849.7 He and Frances Swaffield appeared on the 1861 English Census of Pilsbury Grange, Hartington, Derbyshire, England, enumerated 7 April 1861. Their children Thomas and Silvester were listed as living with them.8 In 1871 Benjamin Swaffield lived in Hartington; he was a farmer of 680 acres employing 8 men and 2 boys. He also had dairy maid and serving girl.3 He and Frances Swaffield appeared on the 1871 English Census of Hartington enumerated 2 April 1871. Their children Benjamin and Clement were listed as living with them.3 In 1873 Benjamin Swaffield owned 105 acres in Hartington, Derbyshire.9 He died on 26 March 1879 in Hartington at age 81; age 81.10 He was buried in St. Giles Churchyard, Hartington, Derbyshire, England.11 He left a will dividing an estate worth approximately £6000. Sarah Milward was bequeathed £600, Thomas Watkinson Swaffield £400, Sylvester Swaffield £400, Clement Swaffield £50, £50 and all unspecified items to wife Frances, as well as an annuity of £20 per annum to be paid by son Benjamin John, to whom tenancy of the farm was passed.12 His estate was probated on 19 May 1879 in Derby, England.13
