John Benjamin1

M, b. 1598, d. 14 June 1645
John Benjamin was born in 1598 in England.1 He married Abigail Eddy, daughter of Rev. William Eddye and Mary Fosten, in 1619 in Cranbrook, Kent, England.1 He died on 14 June 1645 in Watertown, Middlesex county, Massachusetts.1 He graduated at Cambridge. He became an intimate friend of John Winthrop, who became Governor of Massachusetts Bay colony. This friendship led to the Benjamin family coming to America.
John Benjamin came on Capt. Mason's "Lion" with Sir Richard Saltonstall, leaving England 22 June 1632, and arriving at Boston 16 September 1632. He came with wife Abigail, two children, and his brother Richard. John and Abigail soon moved to Newtowne (Cambridge), where they owned considerable real estate. John was made freeman 6 November 1632, and appointed constable by the General Court 20 May 1633.
On 7 November 1634 he was exempt from training, but was required "to have arms for himself and his servants."
In 1635 he was made one of the five surveyors of lands.
At Newtown (later Cambridge) he build a "mansion of intelligence, refinement, religion and hospitality, visited by the clergy of all denominations from far and near ... unsurpassed in elegance and comfort by any in the vicinity." He had the largest library in the colony. The house was destroyed by fire in 1636, and the loss was estimated as over L100. Instead of building in Newtown, he purchased sixty acres in Watertown on the bank of the Charles River and moved there in 1637. In 1642 the records state that he had the largest homestead in Watertown. Besides the homestead he owned four other plots: a house and meadow near the mill, ten acres at Oyster Bank, ten acres at Rocky Meadow, and 8 acres at the "Great Dividends". In 1645 he purchased 16 acres from Capt. Sedgwick.
His will is dated 12 June 1645. He appointed "my brother John Eddie of Watertown and Thomas Marret of Cambridge" executors. Inventory of the estate was taken by Simon Stone, John Eddie and Thomas Marret (Marion), and amounted to L297-3-2, a large sum for those days. His will is abstracted in NEHGR 3:177. He left a widow Abigail and children.
Banks says that John and Richard came from Heathfield parish in Sussex, England. The Biographical Record of New Haven County says the pedigree of the Benjamin family is traced back to the time of William the Conqueror. It quotes the history of Stratford CT as saying of him: "John Benjamin, Esquire, Gentleman, was the first of that name who came to America. His ancestors were Welsh, and were among the first of the landed gentry of England." Andrews supports that, saying "The coat of arms points back to the Crusades. Motto: 'Paussez en avant.' It is an old English family, perhaps with a Welsh branch." The Eddy genealogy says that the branch to which John belonged lived in Lower Hereford. They retained the old Coat of Arms and added the "crest of a chapeau flammant, with the motto, "Poussez en avant".1
