For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 30 January 1919) and awarded the Croix de Guerre (London Gazette 7 November 1918). In September 1919 he was transferred to the Unemployed List of the R.A.F. (from auctioneers notes accompanying an auction of his medals in 2010.) He was a lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps, later RAF in 1915.4 He was a planter in 1956 in Ceylon.5 He died on 30 March 1957 in Hatton Nursing Home, Hatton, Ceylon.6 His estate, effects valued at £984 6s. 9d., was probated on 11 July 1958 in London.6

     David Gardiner was born on 29 April 1636 in Saybrook, Connecticut.2 He was the son of Lyon Gardiner and Marrichgen Dircksdr Duyrcant.1 He married Mary Lerringman on 4 June 1657 in London, England.1 He was second lord of the manor and proprietor of Gardiner's Island. He died on 10 July 1689 in Hartford, Connecticut, at age 53.1 He died suddenly while attending the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut on behalf of eastern Long Island. He did not leave a will.3
