Henry Howell

     Henry Howell was baptized on 13 December 1552 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England.1,2 He was the son of William Howell and Anne Eyre. He inherited the manor of Westbury in Marsh Gibbon from his older brother John in 1575.3 He married Margaret Hawten, daughter of Edward Hawten and Margery Croker, on 16 May 1583 in Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire, England.2 He died on 12 July 1625 in Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, England, at age 72.2 He was buried in Marsh Gibbon.4

He was a farmer and at one time owner of Old Neck in West Moriches.3 He married Eliza Miller, daughter of Zophar Mills Miller and Betsey Davis, on 23 November 1824 in Wading River, Suffolk county, New York; They were married by Rev. A. Luce.1 He came to Southold in 1835.4 He and Eliza Howell appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Southold, Suffolk county, New York, enumerated 15 July 1850. Their children George, Caroline and Frances were listed as living with them.5 He and Eliza Howell appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Southold enumerated 17 July 1860. Their son George was listed as living with them.6 He and Eliza Howell appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Southold enumerated 22 June 1870.7 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Southold, Suffolk county, New York, enumerated 17 June 1880. His son George was listed as living with him, as were his wife Mary Harriet Howell and their children Helen, Mary, Lillian, Eliza, John and Roy.8 He died on 5 March 1883 in Southold at age 81.9

     John Howell was a tavern owner in Canoe Place, Suffolk county, New York.1 He was born on 4 October 1744.2 He was the son of Josiah Howell and Mary Mitchell. He married Elizabeth Brewster, daughter of Daniel Brewster and Anne Sell, on 11 July 1770.3 He was living in 1785 in Canoe Place and later in Ketchabonack. He died on 2 June 1801 in Westhampton, Suffolk county, New York, at age 56.4

     Major John Howell was baptized on 28 November 1624 in Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, England.1 He was the son of Edward Howell and Frances Paxton. He was described as "a man of distinction and one who more than any of his contemporaries in Southampton was entrusted with the management of public business, especially in its graver relations with New England and the colonial government of New York." He married Susannah Mitchell.2 He was deposed in the matter of the nuncupative will of Robert Fordham on 27 November 1674.3 He died on 3 November 1696 at age 71.4 He was buried in Southend Cemetery, Southampton, Suffolk county, New York.
